“Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them,

and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

But it shall not be so among you:

but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,

but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28, KJV)

The word the Athenians used for their Assembly was Ekklesia, the same word used in the New Testament for Church
(and it is the greatest philological irony in all of Western history that this word,
which connoted equal participation in all deliberation by all members,
came to designate a kind of self-perpetuating, self-protective Spartan gerousia -
which would have seemed patent nonsense to Greek-speaking Christians of New Testament times,
who believed themselves to be equal members of their Assembly.)

The Parish Council Discusses Current Matters - Part 1 of 2

October 30, 2012

Part 1 of 2
Fellow Parishioners,
The Parish Council felt it was necessary to respond to the letter dated October 24, 2012 that was received by each of you per the instructions of the Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver.
It is important that you know that this was an internal communication between Mr. Dimitrios Tsagaris and the Metropolitan. It was written to confirm the face to face conversation they had on September 27, 2012 at which time Mr. Tsagaris discussed many concerns about what was transpiring in our community.
At the time of the original meeting, the Metropolitan requested that the information discussed not be shared with the entire Parish Council as "he was planning to handle the situation himself." The letter you received yesterday, was simply our President reaching out to the Metropolitan for assistance in determining what our Parish Council should be doing and discussing at our regularly scheduled board meeting. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to contact the Metropolitan prior to our board meeting to seek direction. Mr. Tsagaris continued to believe that the Metropolitan was planning to help the community and would give us direction we needed to help heal this community.
Rather than contacting us, the Metropolitan contacted the Holy Trinity office and directed that Mr. Tsagaris’ letter be sent to the whole community. Several things discussed in that letter were of a sensitive nature and we were trying to deal with the situation delicately and respectfully. We as an Executive Committee would never have released that information without confirmation and direction from the Metropolitan. The letter was shared with the rest of the Parish Council just hours before you received the letter.
Last evening [October 29th] we moved forward with our regularly scheduled Parish Council meeting, where non-Parish Council members of our parish were also in attendance. However, notably absent from this Parish Council meeting were any of the clergy assigned to our parish. During that meeting we addressed many items of concern and importance to this community ranging from finances, budgetary, to the La France apartments maintenance issues to just name few.
We as a Parish Council are of the opinion that we are faced with many important and pressing issues and these issues transcend beyond the circumstances surrounding the Icon at Prophet Elias. It was disheartening to a great number of the Parish Council that the clergy were absent during our meeting and during your community’s time of need. Great men and women chose to lead in the face of adversity instead of wilting to obscurity and irrelevance. We believe, like with the annual Greek Festival, that the clergy should be present during the joyous times facing our community. However, we also believe the clergy should be present during the hard times, offering assistance and guidance to members of our community, including your duly elected Parish Council. Sadly this was not the case yesterday as no clergy were present because of personal refusal to attend, or as per our Metropolitan’s directive, either as a Priest or as a concerned member of our beloved community.
Today, a second e-mail blast was initiated from the Prophet Elias office stating that His Eminence did not endorse the prior letter. This was equally confusing. Remember that the letter was a confirmation of a private conversation between His Eminence and our Parish Council President. It is unclear what the Metropolitan hoped to convey with sending the second e-mail blast.
The parish council is saddened that after reaching out to His Eminence for help and guidance and also going through the appropriate channels described in the UPR’s article 30, Section 4, the Metropolitan responded in a manner that can only be described as purposely divisive and an attempt to discredit the hard working members of your Parish Council and it is consistent, in spirit, with previous communications to our community since the first day we took the office of affirmation.
Please be aware that we have written a letter to his Eminence which is also being sent as an attachment to this e-blast for you to read. If we are provided with additional communications we will forward them on to you in a timely manner.
As always, we are trying to be transparent with all of our parish members. We are staying focused and are trying to meet the needs of our community in a way that will allow all of the community to grow and prosper. We have listened to many parishioners that believe many drastic changes must occur to turn our community around and restore the faith of our parishioners in their church and its elected officials. We are committed to do so and will be by your side to serve our Church and community.
We hope this information will help answer many of the questions you have and as always, we are available through telephone or email to address your questions and concerns.
Part 2 of 2 of this communication will be separately transmitted shortly after this one, due to technical issues of attaching two documents on the same communication.
The attachment to the 2nd communication is a summary report given by our President Dimitri Tsagaris, about his meeting with His Eminence on Sep 27th 2012 in Denver, Colorado and is also an attachment to the official Parish Council minutes of October 1, 2012.
In His Name and Service,
Your Parish Council

Nick Colessides Comments Upon the Needed Defenestration of Fr. Kouremetis

Desperate acts.

I just received, courtesy of others, the below listed “clarification;” it was not signed. It gives us the impression that it was a follow up by Mr. Tsagaris, on his correspondence to the Denver Aghio.

However, this is not the case. Mr. Tsagaris did not mail the “clarification.” Fr. Kouremetis usurped the Denver Aghio. It is as if the Denver Bishop is unable to write his own editorial comment. We don’t need to know whether he endorses the letter; and, we don’t care. Incidentally no endorsement is necessary. Mr. Tsagaris recapped his meeting with the Metropolitan. We do not see any repudiation of the truth of the events and the discussion. The Tsagaris letter is factual and it points out the need for Fr. Kouremetis to go.

We do not need endorsements. We need action.

It is time that Fr. Michael be swiftly removed from his office as a Proistameno of our Parish.

We can no longer tolerate his prevarications.

Please urge all clerical authorities to reassign him, so that we all can live in peace.

Thank you,

Nick

THE STORY BEHIND THE UTAH MIRACLES
Denver Metropolitan Isaiah and His Salt Lake City Miracles

By Theodore Kalmoukos
ΤΝΗ Staff Writer

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The crisis that has created a rift at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Salt Lake City, UT with the unsuccessful insistence of Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver to divide the historic parish into two is experiencing another twist. This time it has to do with a “miracle” that supposedly is occurring at the church of Prophet Elias.

As TNH had reported on Nov. 13, 2010 an icon of Christ was said to have exuded oil on Oct. 17, 2010 during the Divine Liturgy, which Metropolitan Isaiah declared a miracle. In a letter to Fr. Michael Kouremetis dated Oct. 20, he wrote the following: “The Lord has answered our prayers asking Him to resolve confusing situation in the Salt Lake City area regarding the two parishes."

“When icons exude tears, like many of the Ever-Virgin Mary have, it is a sign of caution and problems. But, when an icon exudes oil, that is a sign of healing and blessings. When I was informed that the icon of Christ the Archpriest was exuding oil during the Divine liturgy when we celebrated the Holy Fathers of the Seventh and final Ecumenical Council in Nicea, I realized that a miracle had occurred. It is not usual for an icon of Christ the Lord to exude oil or even tears. I truly believe that our Lord heard our prayers to make His presence known and to resolve the situation of the two parishes. Now there can be no question in the minds of any of His people. Our Lord recognizes His parishes as monogamous and independent, each with a Proistamenos representing Him through the local bishop. Both parishes can now proceed to grow and to develop for His greater glory and the salvation of His people. The Lord Jesus Christ has spoken with this miracle, and His people will be faithful to His divine will.”

On October 1 of this year, Metropolitan Isaiah in a letter addressed to priests Michael Kouremetis and Matthew Gilbert and also to the parish council reversed himself on the “miracle.” He wrote that “two years have passed from the time I was informed of your icon of the Lord. Yet I have never received any information regarding healing attributed to the oil from the icon at Prophet Elias. On the contrary, recently I have received written information signed by individuals that oil has never actually come forth from the icon in question.”

Isaiah also wrote that “in order to verify the truth in this very serious matter, I am asking that anyone who has been anointed with the oil from the icon and who has received relief or healing in any way, to inform me, so that I may know definitely that my letter of October 20, 2010 reflects a true phenomenon, and was not based on imagination or biased intentions.”

Isaiah also informed that he has a “miraculous” icon at his Metropolitan Center: “An icon of the Theotokos which is over 200 years old and which continues to exude oil. Several persons who have been anointed with the oil have been healed of various maladies. Among them is one woman who had been diagnosed with cancer and on a later examination was told that she had no malignancy.”

On October 17, Isaiah wrote a new letter to the parish officials which reversed his stand of his letter on October 1. He wrote that “I have been informed in writing by respected and reputable people of the community that they have truly seen oil emitting from within the holy icon of our Lord. More importantly, several members have been healed of physical maladies after being anointed with the oil.”

Isaiah also wrote that “I am now totally convinced that my words in the October 20, 2010 letter to the parish are based on factual phenomena of healing which came about through the icon of our Lord. Because of this, I am truly relieved and thankful to God that so many members of the community have responsibly attested to the fact that the oil exuding from the holy icon was truly real.”

The sexton of the church Bob Marcooles on October 25, 2010 under the instruction of Kouremetis wrote that he was “writing this letter freely and I verify that I did not spill any oil on the miraculous icon of Christ the Archpriest. This is truly a miracle from God.”

But in an interview on September 22, 2012 with parish council president Dimitri Tzagaris (sic), attorney Nick Angelides and Marcooles, “the miracle” was explained. Marcooles “got on a step ladder
and went to fill the lamp using a plastic bottle filled with oil. He tipped the plastic bottle filled to
the top and poured into the lamp above the icon of Christ. As Bob Marcooles pulled the bottle back oil shot out of the bottle and splattered onto his hand and onto the floor.”

DIRECTIVE from the Metropolis!

FROM LATEST E-MAIL CORRESPONDENCE TO THE GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY OF GREATER SALT LAKE:

His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah has directed that the attached original correspondence  he received from Parish Council President, Dimitri Tsagaris, be sent to the parish via e-mail.

October 24, 2012 SENT VIA OVERNIGHT MAIL

His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah
Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Denver
4550 East Alameda Avenue
Denver, CO 80246-1208

Your Eminence,

Again thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet with you in your office on Thursday September the 27th, 2012, to discuss many issues facing our beloved community.

As I mentioned in my letter to you, the attached summary report of our meeting was given to the Parish Council on Monday Oct 1, 2012. Besides our conversation, as reflected in the summary report, I also apprised you and presented to you written documentation and audio materials about two very sensitive issues: a) the issue ofthe Icon, and, b) the necessity for Fr. Michael Kouremetis' immediate reassignment.

On the issue of the Icon:

I provided to you a letter that I found in one of our employee's personnel file, Mr. Bob (George) Marcooles, along with his audio and written transcripts that provided explanation about the letter that was written on official Church stationery dated October 25, 2010, in which Bob signed the following statement:
"I, Bob Marcooles am writing this letter freely and I verify that I did not spill any oil on the miraculous Icon of Christ the Archpriest. This is truly a miracle from God."
Sincerely, Bob Marcooles
As I explained to you, at our meeting, upon discovery of the above-mentioned letter, I informed the Executive Committee about the existence of such letter, and the allegations, (as many of our community members heard over the last couple of years), that Bob did not compose such a letter. He did, however, sign such letter under pressure and fear. Most importantly, due to the sensitive issue regarding the icon, it was decided that I would proceed and contact Mr. Marcooles and give him the opportunity, if he wished, to explain the letter.

After my meeting with Bob, in the presence of Mr. Angelides, an attorney and retired military officer, who took the minutes of the interview, and also created the summary transcript of the audio tape, it became apparent to me that Bob was not the writer of the signed document, and that Bob was also directed by Fr. Michael not to discuss the accidental oil spill while he was filling the oil lamp hanging above the Icon.

Under these circumstances, I feel that we are dealing with a very serious issue, and most importantly with a very sensitive issue, of a premature declaration of a miracle, followed by actions of a cover-up.

I, along with the Executive Committee of our Parish Council, felt it was our duty and responsibility for you to know the details before the issue and documentation is to be discussed with Fr. Michael and Bob in the Parish Council and consequently with the community.

I also expressed to you my true struggle and concern for two reasons.
  • First, our Community and Church cannot afford such damaging controversy and it is vital for you to address this sensitive issue in a timely manner.
  • Second, because Fr. Michael was not present to explain and defend himself, I was planning to immediately provide him with the same materials I provided you with and or meet with all involved.
You shared with me your sincere concerns and sadness for the situation, and expressed to me that this is an issue that you would like to handle yourself. As such, you asked me not to talk to or provide Fr. Michael with any materials, and also suggested not to talk to the Parish Council at that time. I respectfully honored your request and did not.

I tried to communicate with you via telephone on Friday and Saturday, October 19th and 20th, and left messages with your secretary and on your answering machine, (before we received your latest letter dated October 17, 2012), in order to follow up with our September 27th 2012 meeting. I will keep trying to verbally communicate with you.

We received your two letters, dated October 1st and 17th, with regard to the icon. For this we thank you. I also wish to tell you that those letters raised more questions, rather than providing answers, about this sensitive issue.

I mentioned to you that I have personally seen members of our parish as well as other Christians kneel in front of the icon as we all often do with icons. The issue, as we discussed at the meeting, is not whether people find relief when they pray to an icon or when they ask from Panagia or other Saints of our Church for their help with the various issues that they face, concerning health, career or well-being. We, as faithful Orthodox Christians, experience these kinds ofMiracles, Thavmata constantly in our daily lives. The real question that we face here is the circumstances under which the oil appeared on the icon of Christ the Archpriest at Prophet Elias. Also, the subsequent actions of Fr. Michael to silence Bob Marcooles to talk about the accidental spillage of oil, while he was filling the oil lamp overhanging directly over the icon, on his hands and the surrounding area by directing him to not talk about it. In addition, by pressuring Bob to sign the letter dictated by Fr. Michael and typed by his secretary verifying that this is "a true miracle from God." For these serious reasons I wanted to meet fust with you in private, before informing anyone else including Fr. Michael and the Parish Council at large.

It was my oversight not to mention at our meeting that Bob is going through emotionally hard times because of what has transpired. I am concerned and do feel for him as well.

On the importance of Fr. Michael Kouremetis' immediate reassignment:

I made it clear that Father Michael's liturgical and social abilities are superb and I admire him. However, I stated to you that there is another side of his personality and actions that have resulted in his inability to be effective as a priest in our community. He has, as well, put you personally in a difficult situation by repeating that he is following your directives (sometimes for trivial things). Most importantly, he has simply failed to provide the example of a good spiritual shepherd to the overwhelming majority of this community.

We have deep concerns that Father Michael has abdicated his role of community healer; he is now considered to be a highly divisive force. We are equally concerned that Fr. Michael has lost the trust of the larger Salt Lake City Greek Orthodox Community and is no longer an effective shepherd of our parish and Parish Council.

I explained to you that I hear, time after time, from many parishioners, and also from our own Executive Committee and Parish Council members that this community will not in any way move forward spiritually, fmancially or otherwise while Fr. Michael is among our clergy.

I provided you with a list of concerns and reasoning as to why Fr. Michael should be peacefully reassigned by the end of the year to another community because of performance and credibility issues. I also mentioned that this Parish Council does not wish to place itself, Your Eminence, and most importantly our parishioners, in a UPR fight or in a circus-like situation in front of a Parish Assembly. I do not view it as a UPR or Metropolis and Archdiocese conflict issue. I see this transfer as a required, necessary and prudent administrative action that will move our community forward. Fr. Michael announced from the pulpit on Sunday October 7th that the people who do not believe in miracles have "black souls" and also on October 14th Fr. Michael announced the two year anniversary of the miracle and mentioned that "there are among us people that do not believe in miracles and are antagonists of the Church". Statements like those do not move the community and Church forward.

Thank you for listening and also sharing your personal thoughts with me; I understood that this is an issue known to you from other sources, and that you will look into it.

In order for this community to move forward, the Parish Council has no other option but to discuss, among other employee personnel issues, Fr. Michael's issue as well, and to take the appropriate action.

In closing, I humbly and respectfully request that, this time, you take appropriate actions and allow this community to move forward and to finally heal. You have a capable Parish Council to assist you, and most importantly a community that is willing and determined to do so. Give us a chance. There are past mistakes and hard feelings across the board, however as we discussed, leaders have no luxury to take things personally. You have the power and the authority to let us move forward. The good of our community, our Church, our children and the legacy we leave to our future generation of leaders is at stake here.

In His Name and Service,

Respectfully,
/s/

Thoughts on the Metropolitan's Actions

“If you love the Church, if you love your community, as I believe you do, you will step forward with faith at the special general assembly and declare that your community is under our Ecumenical Patriarchate and our holy Archdiocese. Moreover, you will declare that your community will no longer be a secular "association" controlled by a select few temporal humans, but rather by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has promised that His Church will continue to be in the world, even to the great day of His Second Coming.” +Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver, November 15, 2011

Who does Metropolitan Isaiah favor? Does he side with his fellow priests or with our community? Who did Metropolitan Isaiah side with when news of child sexual abuse came to light about Rev. Nicholas Katinas? Did the Metropolitan have concern about the victims in this case or was he more concerned about his clergyman? Did the Metropolitan think about his flock in Salt Lake when he decided to split our community, or did he side with Fr. Michael again and again? Did the Metropolitan listen to the advice of Archbishop Demetrios on the subject?

The Metropolitan tells us above that if we love our community that we must agree to the amended and restated articles of incorporation. This way, we will not be controlled by a select few temporal humans, but rather by our Lord and Savior. Time and time again, the Metropolitan places himself and his clergy above their flock. We are a strong community and we are a good community. To think how this man and his puppets have tried to disgrace the most honorable people among us causes great anger and pain. Our Church leaders have stepped on the names of Bapis, Sargetakis, Skedros and others that have earned the highest respect among us. The Metropolitan does not place his flock above himself. We have no problem with our community being controlled by our Lord and Savior and our community deserves a Metropolitan and Clergy that follow the Lord's teachings.

Perhaps someday we will have a Metropolitan who has earned the respect of our community like the people he now tries to step on. Perhaps when that day comes, this community will favor the adoption of the amended and restated article of incorporation. But for now we will remain a good community, strong in our faith and without the need of false miracles.

- Jim Sefandonakis

Conspiracy or Miracle??

Continuation of the “miracle” saga.

An accidental oil spillage is not a miracle.

Last week I ruminated about the miracle.  I was wondering whether or not the Denver Aghio was misinformed or a conspirator.  The answer came last [Saturday] night.  The Denver Metropolitan took leave of his senses and proclaimed widely that it was indeed a miracle.

Last week Mr. Marcooles called me and related to me that the oil was accidentally spilled, when he was cleaning in and around the icon.  Mr. Marcooles said that he was coerced in signing the letter; the letter dictated by Fr. Michael and typed by his secretary.  Mr. Marcooles also told me that he told several people, who also related the same story to me, about the accidental oil spillage.  We demand that Fr. Michael make the letter public at this time so that we can all be informed.  At a minimum there is a diametrically opposed position which needs to be researched, so that we can all find the truth.

My limited understanding about miracles is that in order that some act or event be proclaimed a miracle, the Holy Eparchial Synod and the Archbishop must investigate and decide.  It cannot be left to either a single priest or a single bishop.  It is crystal clear that during last week’s Synodal meeting, the Holy Eparchial Synod did not consider the Salt Lake miracle.  The Denver Metropolitan did not attend the Synodal meeting.  He no longer enjoys the confidence of his fellow Synodal bishops.  He has become a non-entity.

Christ said in one of His parables: Η πίστη σου σεσωκέσαι. The Denver Bishop finds no solace in faith.  He did not attribute this miracle to the healing power of a person’s great faith for the veneration of the icon.  Instead the Bishop thought that it was convenient to conspire to fabricate the miracle.  Faking and fabricating a miracle and supporting the claim by unnamed sources strains the credulity of the event, and the credibility of the Bishop.

The Denver Metropolitan continues to follow Rasputin’s great example of disinformation.

It is time that we get out from under the yoke of the Denver Metropolitan and his minion appointed clergymen.

Let us ALL unite to go back to our roots.

Best regards to all.

CEASELESS WONDERS! More October Missives!

Moderator's Note: Father Michael sent out this latest note via e-mail on October 20 from Metropolitan Isaiah. The original letter may be viewed here.

One further note: interestingly, Fr. Michael received this letter prior to his scanning it and sending it out via e-mail on Saturday, October 20th. Holy Trinity's copy of the same letter arrived on Monday, October 22nd.

Collusion? Obviously.

From the Office of Father Michael

Beloved in the Lord,

We have just received the following letter from His Emminence Metropolitan Isaiah directing us to email this letter to the entire parish. His has also asked us to send a hard-copy to each home which will be sent this coming week. Please excuse the formatting of the emailed copy, the mailed copy will be in its original format. We give glory and thanksgiving to our Lord and Savior for the blessings He bestows upon us.

Beloved in the Lord,

During the past two weeks, I have received many surprising and inspiring responses to my letter of October 1, 2012 to the community regarding the holy icon of our Lord Jesus Christ. I have been informed in writing by respected and reputable people of the community that they have truly seen oil emitting from within the holy icon of our Lord. More importantly, several members have been healed of physical maladies after being anointed with the oil.

One highly respected member of the community informed me in writing that the reason that this person did not mention the healing to anyone was to be faithful to our Lord's words in the holy gospels, when He healed certain people and told them not to tell anyone of the healing. Although this statement of our Lord is in all four gospels, this parishioner decided to inform me of the healing miracle, due to my letter of October 1sr of this year. For this, I am truly grateful because I was remiss in not asking for any evidence concerning the exuding of the oil from the Lord's icon, when this phenomenon first began.

I am now totally convinced that my words in the October 20, 2010 letter to the parish are based on factual phenomena of healing which came about through the icon of our Lord. Because of this I am truly relieved and thankful to God that so many members of the community have responsibly attested to the fact that the oil exuding from the holy icon was truly real.

May our Lord's rich blessings continue to inspire and strengthen the people of Holy Trinity and Prophet Elias to come together in love and peace for the growth of the Church in the Salt Lake City area and, especially, for the salvation of God's people in His coming Kingdom.

With Paternal Blessings,

Questioning the "Christianity" of "THE MATH"?

Someone recently accused this site of " 'Mitt Romney style' accounting" when discussing "the math" surrounding the community’s recent elections, the makeup of the elected parish council, and the wishes reflected by the majority in this community.

We are not sure what the political reference infers, but another comment made was that "the Math" we referred in a previous blog article somehow reflected the feelings of the "non-Christians" in the community, as opposed to, what we are to assume to be the wishes of "Christians"?

We are not sure what this assertion implies either.

Is it that if one opposes the splitting of the community one is de facto "non-Christian"? Or is it that one cannot be "christian" and support the current GOP candidate? (That would be news to quite a few of our fellow citizens who would undoubtedly insist otherwise!)

We are unsure how or why these assertions might be relevant to the community's concerns in matters that are important to our church community.

To date it has never occurred to anyone who has written on this blog to conflate the secular politics of this country with the insular problems of our community - or even with the larger concerns of Orthodoxy in this country and abroad. Many of this community's members have expressed opinions on this blog, undoubtedly reflecting diverse political points of view that are utterly irrelevant to the ongoing crisis in our Church - locally, nationally and globally.

For the record, this site is NOT politically partisan. Those who have written here are committed to the restoration of this community's vibrancy as a beacon of Orthodoxy, Hellenism and other Orthodox cultures, and, more importantly, to the greater glory of our Lord. Additionally, this blog has hoped to initiate a dialogue that will lead to a better balance between clergy and laity throughout this country.

Finally, we have said it before and we will say it again: Holy Trinity and Prophet Elias are part of this community's legacy and both belong to the Lord and to this community as a whole. If they are to split, it will be the MAJORITY that decides, based on the REAL MATH, no matter who counts it, or what some, ignoring the dictum, "judge not lest yet also be judged", choose to label as "Christian" or "non-Christian"!

Your Eminence,

l humbly and sincerely thank you for giving me the opportunity to meet with you in your office on Thursday, September 27, 2012 where we discussed many issues facing our beloved community.

I felt the meeting was very open, sincere, productive, and informative for both of us.

A report of our meeting was given to the entire Parish Council during last night's October 1, 2012 meeting.

The Parish Council thanked me for taking the initiative to meet with you on a one-to-one basis, and also expressed their gratitude for your encouragement to continue our communications with you at any time. We further thank you for planning to visit with us at the near future.

During our October 1, 2012 meeting, we discussed ways in which we might acknowledge and thank the many volunteers who provided exceptional service during the critical time period before and during our annual Greek Festival, along with other events. We have begun with letters to the overall chairpersons for the festival. Over the coming days, we will work on acknowledging the many others, without whom the success of this summer's events would have been greatly diminished.

The Parish Council directed me to copy you on one of those letters. I thank you for your time and your concern for our efforts.

Beloved in the Lord,

On October 20, 2010 I wrote a letter to Father Michael Kouremetis in response to a telephone call I had received from him informing me that an icon of our Lord Jesus Christ began to exude oil at the Prophet Elias parish. My emotions took hold of me since in our Metropolis Center we have an icon of the Theotokos which is over two hundred years old and which continues to exude oil. Several persons who have been anointed with the oil have been healed of various maladies. Among them is one woman who had been diagnosed with cancer and on a later examination was told that she had no malignancy.

Two years have passed from the time I was informed of your icon of the Lord. Yet I have never received any information regarding healings attributed to the oil from the icon at Prophet Elias. On the contrary, recently I have received written information signed by individuals that oil has never actually come forth from the icon in question.

Please know that when I was first informed of this reputed phenomenon, I immediately believed that this was a sign from the Lord that the problems in the community would come to an end and that unity and peace would prevail. Obviously, this has not happened.

My fear at this time is that this event was either imagined by those who also wanted to see an end to the anomalies in the community, or that it was orchestrated for personal reasons. If it was done deliberately, then this was a sacrilegious act which can bring judgmental consequences against those responsible.

In order to verify the truth in this very serious matter, I am asking that anyone who has been anointed with the oil from the icon and who has received relief or healing in any way, to inform me, so that I may know definitively that my letter of October 20, 2010 reflects a true phenomenon, and was not based on imagination or biased intentions.

With paternal blessings,

MATH IS THE LANGUAGE OF GOD'S UNIVERSE

I am sorry to say that even the makeup of the current parish council which I ratified demonstrates a clear division between those who identify with the Holy Trinity Cathedral and those who identify with Prophet Elias Church. Some responsibility regarding this sad reality also rests with our Archdiocese in New York.
- Metropolitan Isaiah, Letter to the Greek Orthodox Community of Greater Salt Lake, dated September 4, 2012
His Eminence is "sorry" about a misconception he has concerning the current elected parish council. However, his sorrow does not make his observation accurate.

It is a really funny thing about free elections: their outcomes tend to reflect accurately the wishes and aspirations of those voting. As opposed to appointed parish councils, where appointees and clergy sought constantly to stack the deck against the vast majority, this parish council quite accurately reflects the will of the parishioners in this community.

To illustrate, let us return - once again - to the original 2007 survey which showed just 13% of respondents in favor of splitting this community.  At present there is only one vocal parish council member who favors splitting the community. There may be one or two more who might favor splitting, depending on the circumstances surrounding such an action.

Stephen Hawking, the renowned astrophysicist once famously said, "Mathematics is the language of God's universe."

So, let's do the math.

If only one parish council member favors a split, that amounts to 7% of the council. If we're being generous and consider that three parish council members might favor a split, that would be 20%. And, if we take the average, and consider two members favor this split and we come up with, lo and behold, THIRTEEN percent!

Math is, indeed, the language of God's universe!

AND SO THE GAMES CONTINUE!

On a spring day a few months ago our Metropolitan finally allowed us what was, even under the oft-cited, cherry-picked and highly flawed UPRs, our right and our due. He deigned to allow a open general assembly and then free elections. He also said, “no restrictions” on WHO could run, or WHO could be elected. We were of course pleased. We figured everyone involved was exhausted and finally understood it was time to turn “swords into plowshares”.

It is really nice that our Metropolitan starts out his August letter thanking the community and its elected parish council (with still one member yet to be sworn in, despite the assurances that "anyone" could run and could be elected!) for its attempts to reach out to all in a spirit of unity, understanding and forgiveness. He further offers prayers that such a spirit will continue to grow.

Strangely, (or, perhaps not so?), he then proceeds in that same letter to offer a highly tortured, utterly inconsistent, explanation as to why HE instructed three parishioners to, yet again, establish a separate corporation – for Prophet Elias only!

In regard to the other letter of the same date, which requests information about the renewal of the Prophet Elias Corporation, please know that as the hierarch of the Metropolis of Denver, I am obligated to oversee all the parishes which are officially under the Archdiocese through the Metropolis. The community of Salt Lake is reincorporated from 1974 as an independent corporation solely under the State of Utah. The Prophet Elias Corporation on the other hand, is recognized as a legal name under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This was my decision in order to conform to the Uniform Parish Regulations. In making this important distinction I am able to recognize the greater community composed of faithful stewards as being an integral part of the Archdiocese.
Establishing a corporation for only ONE of the two churches in this community in no way conforms to the UPRs. Nor, of course, is it applicable to the well-established exception this community legally enjoys, and has upheld by vote last November, despite dire threats from the hierarchy of what could happen if this community did not foreswear that exception.

Further, in making what he says is “this 'important' distinction”, the Metropolitan claims that he is recognizing what he calls “the greater community composed of faithful stewards”.

Your Eminence, the greater community in this valley, is composed of faithful stewards, who have proven, time and again, that, whichever church they might attend here on any given Sunday or holiday, they all belong to the Greek Orthodox Community of Greater Salt Lake, comprised of TWO ekklesies that our forebears built, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, both under the aegis of one Greek Orthodox community. We know you don't like the arrangement, but this has worked for us, and this is what we still want. After all we have been through, the excuse that yet again establishing a separate P.E. corporation “protects” that particular church from a takeover by a charlatan clergyman is both dishonest and absurd.

In no way can there be a recognition of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church as a separate corporation under the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Archbishop Demetrios and the Holy Synod were highly specific in a letter to our community in March 2011:
"The ecclesiastical charter that was issued on April 10, 2010 is to be considered inapplicable and consequently withdrawn. Similarly, the Prophet Elias corporation will be formally dissolved and no separate trade names will be filed with the state of Utah for Holy Trinity and Prophet Elias." (emphasis added)
We have before pointed out that this passage by our Archbishop seems utterly unclear to Mr. Shand et al. Additionally, these explicit statements seem to have confused our Metropolitan and his counselors as well! Of course in his September letter our erstwhile Metropolitan throws the Archbishop under the bus, along with everyone else. He himself accepts no blame in causing any of this strife.

In the Metropolitan's August letter, he goes on to state:
Moreover, from your letter you state that the renewal of the Prophet Elias Corporation is divisive in nature. In regard to divisiveness, what can I say about parish funds which must be under the direct custodianship of the Parish Council, but are under separate corporations such as the HighTower investment firm in Chicago, the separate Hellenic Cultural Foundation and the Greek Orthodox Trust Committee? Are these not equally, if not more, divisive than the Prophet Elias Corporation which has no funds?

Question: How does the community even know that there are no funds? Are we to believe that the unelected principals of the renewed corporation do not know how to open a checking account?

The metropolitan's assertion also poses a false equivalency. The HCF and the trust committee are entities overwhelmingly approved by general assembly VOTES, and one of the trustees of such, is always the parish council president. Obviously this fact gives the Parish Council OVERSIGHT! The situation is set up in a manner quite similar to Leadership 100, or is the Metropolitan now disapproving of that institution as well?

Conversely, no general assembly in this valley has ever approved any initial establishment, or any renewal, of a separate Prophet Elias Corporation. This latest action is in direct contradiction to the Archbishop's revocation of a separate charter for Prophet Elias. It also runs counter to SEVERAL directly expressed votes and surveys by the overwhelming majority of members of this community over the past several years. Moreover, it should be remembered that the Metropolitan said he would honor those votes!

Where in the UPRs does it state that two or three members can simply take a church’s identity and claim it as a corporation in their names, without any election or grant of authority by the general assembly? This is, simply put, yet another putsch by a minority, who have the Metropolitan's ear, with tacit approval by at least one of the local clergy, to split this community and take over the church on behalf of the wishes of, again, a TINY MINORITY.

Furthering the false equivalency, there is absolutely nothing divisive about the separate accounts designated for specifically allocated projects for this community. These were voted on and approved by the general assembly. Just as funds were collected and donated for the pavilion and prayer garden at Prophet Elias (and, at a time when the dome and roof still leaks!), so funds have been collected and dedicated for various other projects for the community. It is not up to the Metropolitan, or the very few, to claim that these allocated funds can be diverted to other purposes. It would be dishonest to do so when these funds were gathered for specific purposes and upgrades. In fact, the Metropolitan's freezing of said funds has limited the interest those funds could be collecting; it has also put the specific projects for which they were gathered on an indefinite hold. It would be tragic if people who had hoped to see projects completed in honor of loved ones’ memories, may not live to witness such, due to the freezing of these funds by the Metropolitan. Surely it is past time that this situation be rectified! And, since he is so fond of bringing up the afterlife, … συγνὠμη, δἐσποτα, αλλά τι ψυχή θα παραδὠσεις εσὐ σε αυτή την περίπτωση;

It is unfortunate, yet not surprising, that during these past years, when this community had no voice in its own governance, that stewardship dried up. A repressed and unrepresented laity had no other way of making its despair known. If the problem ended up in the courts, the Metropolitan and his cronies are to blame. Pleas and entreaties to the appointed - not elected, to the clergy and the hierarchy, for too long fell on deaf ears. This community has not forgotten that the Metropolitan, in attempting to force a split before the Archdiocese's letter in 2011, was simply demanding that all funds be split, regardless of their original intended use. The Metropolitan is now clearly insinuating that these funds ought to be part of repaying past due allocations for the Archdiocese. There is no doubt that it is unfortunate that the other parishes were forced to shoulder that burden on our behalf. This unfair system portrays yet another travesty to be found in the current Uniform Parish Regulations that were rammed through the supposedly representative Clergy-Laity Congresses.

The Metropolitan blames six individuals who, on behalf of a very large majority in this community, and AS REPRESENTATIVES of that great majority, sued the intransigent appointed parish council members who would not hold an open general assembly, would not provide lists of members that were legally requested, would not provide any sort of transparency, would not conduct audits as they were legally bound to do, and did not have the guts to tell the Metropolitan that they would not betray their own community! Now the Metropolitan asserts that the six "who consider themselves members" (THEY ARE MEMBERS!!!) who represented hundreds, should themselves pay the legal costs of the appointed parish council members. This is nonsense. That lawsuit only occurred because the appointed parish council members themselves were in violation of civil law, AND, of the UPRs. If anything, your intransigent appointed should pay their own legal bills. Yet the elected parish council, in the spirit of forgiveness and unity, is, instead doing so. How we do it is our business. Instead of gratitude for the spirit of forgiveness, we see belligerence.

Our Metropolitan ought to consider that if this community finds itself struggling today, that struggle is directly attributable to his ongoing interference in non-spiritual matters, to his high-handedness in acting on behalf of the very few, to his continuing to seek means by which to split our community on behalf of that very few – despite the majority’s objections, and to his allowing this situation to endure far too long, even after the Archbishop and the Holy Synod asked that it stop. It is long past time that this miserable situation he himself created cease!

The Metropolitan made a step in the right direction last spring. (He refers to it as "bending over backwards".) He allowed a parish assembly, followed by free and open elections, supposedly with no restrictions as to who might be nominated and elected. He then, once again having given his word, reneged, and disallowed two members until such time as the lawsuit was withdrawn. It was withdrawn and in the meantime one elected member withdrew his name. The other still awaits swearing in, and NOW the Metropolitan says that the appointed parish council's attorney's fees must be paid - and how they must be paid - before such can occur.

In taking these bizarre actions, in making these absurd claims, as well as in insinuating himself into the minutiae of governance in this community, the Metropolitan simply is setting a poor example to his flock, and most particularly to our youth. He is our spiritual leader, yet it is he, not we, who confuses the spiritual with the temporal; and, it is he, more than we, who is consumed with money. If nothing else: surely a spiritual leader's word ought to mean something? Surely a spiritual leader can guide, can encourage, without resorting to pettiness, insinuations, back-door machinations? In his own words, "is this not a demonstration of separation and divisiveness?"

Your deeds speak louder than your words, Your Eminence, and neither have always been loving nor kind. You say you "bent over backwards?" No. You go backwards and you go back on your word. Time and again you seek to drag this community back with you. We are not going back.

In your letter you said, "please let us be sincere and forthright, since we are serving our Lord." We can all progress together, unified, in a spirit of cooperation and love. We really can forgive and forget. Or, we can have the disharmony, discord and stagnation of the past few years. You can either guide us, with Christ’s example of the good shepherd, or you can continue to throw out roadblocks and obstacles.

We can move forward if we all set our egos aside, or, the games can continue. The choice is yours, but we are not going back!

John Saltas Responds to Metropolitan Isaiah's Letter

After reading the latest nonsensical and divisive letter from the Metropolitan, the obvious becomes even more so:

The single common thread of 50 years of confusion in the Salt Lake City Parish is the Metropolitan himself.

  • This community has behaved honestly and ethically--he has not.
  • He disavows fair elections.
  • He makes excuses and false rationale.
  • He sets a bar, then moves it.
  • He orders secret acts (establishing Prophet Elias as a corporation for dubious reasons) from parishioners then seems amazed at what comes.
  • How many good people--our friends and neighbors--have left due to his behavior?
  • How much has that cost this community in hurt feelings? Hurt our image? Hurt this community financially?
This is not a Salt Lake City problem. This is not a problem of the people comprising this parish. This is a problem of the clergy and leadership of the Greek Orthodox Church and it is rooted in the Metropolitan seat in Denver.

Nick Colessides Responds to the Metropolitan's Latest Letter to Our Community

Dear All,

During the Watergate days Senator Sam Ervin was right.  He said “follow the money."

Once again the Denver Metropolitan, by his latest correspondence proves that in his mind “it is all about the money.”  He wants to get his greedy hands on the Parish’s money.  All the money that our Parish/Community has, in the accounts he has referenced, belongs to the Community.  The money belongs to the Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake.  That money can ONLY be disbursed by the commands of the community's General Assembly; not his.

We have only one answer for him:  Μολών Λαβέ!  It is the answer that the Greeks gave to the Persians.  It is the reason that the 300 Spartans sacrificed themselves against tyranny.

The Denver Aghios flip-flops on his word.  He prevaricates.

We need immediate action to repel the aggressive, unchristian actions and words of the Denver Metropolitan.  This fight will never end until the Denver Metropolitan is replaced by a caring and loving man of God.  And, the sooner the better.

Filakia to all.

Nick Colessides

P.S.  Please distribute as widely as you can, and ask our parishioners, and those in other parishes, to join the fight against the Denver Metropolitan's inequities and offensive conduct.

Metropolitan's Letter to GOCGSL, September 4, 2012

The following letter was sent to Father Kouremetis and distributed by him to Father Gilbert and to the Parish Council during our Greek Festival Weekend. In keeping with their promise to keep the community informed in these matters, the Parish Council distributed this letter to the community via e-mail on September 8. The Metropolitan's original correspondence may be viewed here.

Beloved in the Lord,

I am in receipt of a letter signed by Mr. Dimitrios Tsagaris, the Parish Council President dated August 23, 2012. The letter informs me that there was a final resolution regarding the attorney fees owed by the community pertaining to the recent lawsuit filed by five individuals in October, 2011 against eight members of the previous parish council.

Mr. Tsagaris' letter requests that I now ratify the election of the final candidate who was elected, Mr. Yannis Armaou, the rationale being that a final resolution of the lawsuit had been achieved. In this legal action five individuals who consider themselves members of the community sued the eight former council members. The total financial cost against the parish in the form of attorney fees was originally $56,467.10, with the spiritual cost being far greater. Your insurance carrier paid $25,000 of the debt leaving the balance to be paid by the community. After being given a discount the community is obligated to pay $28,000 to the attorney who defended the eight council members.

Reflecting back these past two and one-half years, I became aware of the fact that a vocal group of parishioners preferred to believe the un-Christian gossip and accusations against other parishioners, against the office of a bishop in the Church, and even against our Ecumenical Patriarch. Adding to this detrimental behavior, many parishioners were encouraged to give nothing or a mere token stewardship commitment so that they would be able to vote at the ensuing general assembly and to vote at the recent parish council elections. As you know, I relaxed almost all the requirements to allow this to happen.

Yet the fact remains that your community has four separate accounts, which are not under the current Parish Council, clearly in contrast to the Archdiocese Uniform Parish Regulations which state that all funds of a parish must be under the custodianship of each current parish council. The separate funds in your community are the HighTower investments, the Greek Orthodox Community Restoration Fund, the Skedros Memorial Fund, and the Hellenic Community Foundation.

In the face of this reality, and due to a cash flow problem in the community, you are now taking the current stewardship of parisr..ioners in order to pay the attorney fees of the lawsuit. Furthermore, the sequence of events following the lawsuit has caused increasing financial instability, including the community's inability to pay its commitments to the Archdiocese. These important points force me to pause in regard to ratifying Mr. Armaou's election to the Council given his role as a plaintiff. Until all problematic financial matters related to this have been resolved, Mr. Armaou's status will remain pending.

In my letter of ratification to the previous parish council, dated May 29, 2012, I called to attention the words of Saint Paul found in his first epistle to the Corinthians (6: 1-8) which prohibit church members from suing their fellow members. On the basis of this Scriptural exhortation, it appears most logical and correct to expect the five individuals who filed the lawsuit against their fellow parishioners to pay the $28,000 to the attorney. After all, the debt is a direct result of their action in opposition to Holy Scripture. This would eliminate the need to use the stewardship funds of the parishioners to pay an invoice which does not rightly belong to them. To compound this anomaly, the statement is made in the recent letter sent out to the parishioners that no management fees were paid to one of the individuals who sued along with the other four, who controls the largest amount of community funds. Undoubtedly the $28,000 in legal fees negate any benefit gained in this regard.

One positive statement I discovered in the letters sent to me in reference to the operating accounts of the parish was that, "We were assured to know that none of the accounts have been mishandled .. . " Obviously, this clears the names of the members of the previous parish councils.

Please know that this whole affair saddens me greatly. In my fifty years in the holy priesthood beginning at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Salt Lake City in 1962, I have never encountered so much anger and animosity and division in one parish. Attempting to analyze this whole tragedy, only one common string stands out; money! Are we a church or a secular business?

I am sorry to say that even the makeup of the current parish council which I ratified demonstrates a clear division between those who identify with the Holy Trinity Cathedral and those who identify with Prophet Elias Church. Some responsibility regarding this sad reality also rests with our Archdiocese in New York.

My exhortation to all of you is to consider all real estate and all funds secondary to who we are. We are Greek Orthodox Christians who are members of Christ's Church because we believe in His words that our eternal condition will be either with Him in His glorious Kingdom or we will be in the eternal darkness with the devil and all of his fallen angels.

When we came into this world, we found His Church for our salvation, and after we are gone, His Church will remain for those who seek Him and His unchanging truths.

With paternal love,

/s/

The Esteemed Parish council Members

Beloved in the Lord,

I thank you for your three letters which I received last week, two dated July 27, 2012 and one dated August 13, 2012.

In regard to your letter pertaining to the state of the Greek Orthodox Church of Greater Salt Lake, I am most pleased that it conveys a positive spirit. The focus on unity and progress, rather than the negativity of expressions these past two years is most encouraging. I pray that this spirit will continue to grow and to prevail among you and among all the parishioners.

Allow me to cite one point in the letter. You mention that the Parish Council has chosen to develop leadership centered on parishioner involvement through committees. This is very good. However, please keep in mind that every committee of the parish must have a member of the Parish Council as chairman of that committee. Furthermore, all decisions of all committees are considered recommendations to the Parish Council for discussion and acceptance or rejection. This process guarantees that it is the Parish Council which officially represents the parish membership, which ultimately makes all decisions.

Furthermore, the updating of the corporate record with the name, Prophet Elias, guarantees that no other entity in the future can legally use this name. It will continue to be identified with the Greek Orthodox Church. This is important in that we see an increasing number of self-appointed clergymen beginning to use the word "Orthodox" as well as the names of the saints to maintain their congregations which are slowly eroding.

Unfortunately, the 1974 reincorporation recognizes the community solely as a secular organization, rather than as a religious entity. The recent decision of the judge who presided over the litigation against parish members shows the confusion, since he never once referred to the matter as a religious issue involving the inner governance of a religious institution. He obviously knew that secular courts cannot involved themselves in the administrative affairs of churches.

I urge all of you, as members of the current Parish Council, to work in this vital direction, which has divided the income of the community and consequently divides the current membership of the community. The fact of the matter is that it is the way that the money of the parishioners is divided among those other separate accounts which has created this divisiveness among the membership. A direct consequence of this reality is the fact that the community has paid nothing to the Archdiocese for the year 2011 and very little for 2012. And it appears that there is no thought or willingness on the part of those in control to correct this problem. The forty-eight other parishes of this Metropolis have paid the financial obligation of the Salt Lake community for 2011, and there is no concern by the Salt Lake parish to assume its responsibility and obligation to show that it is a vital member parish of the Denver Metropolis. Is this not a demonstration of separation and divisiveness?

As all of you know, I bent over backwards to allow all the parishioners and others among them to vote and to be voted upon for the sake of assisting your unity. Can I not expect some kind of reciprocity from the community through you, the elected council members?

Please let us be sincere and forthright, since we are serving the Church which our Lord established through the Cross and through His Resurrection. We are responsible first to Him and then to one another.

I remain positive in my spirit that you, as the current Parish Council, will do whatever is necessary to please our loving God and to bring unity, peace, and love to God's people, whom you have accepted to serve in His holy name.

With paternal blessings,

+Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver

LET THE GAMES BEGIN - AGAIN! ?

“A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject.”
 Winston Churchill

From the decision of the Holy Eparchial Synod and Archbishop Demetrios in a Letter to the Greek Orthodox Community of Greater Salt Lake dated March 24, 2011:

"The ecclesiastical charter that was issued on April 10, 2010 is to be considered inapplicable and consequently withdrawn. Similarly, the Prophet Elias corporation will be formally dissolved and no separate trade names will be filed with the state of Utah for Holy Trinity and  Prophet Elias."

Mr. Shand is an attorney. Aside from the pure peevishness by him and his cohorts, surely no part of this statement is confusing, vague or unambiguous! So, yet again, as if this hasn't been pointed out over and over again, what part of "NO SEPARATE TRADE NAMES" is unclear?

Further, the people listed below must have felt that there was a clear "go ahead" signal - since they reinstated their attempt to separately incorporate the church they intend to separate from this community on the very same day that the suit against a former selected parish council was dropped! Obviously, this action once again provides "hope" for the very few who want to effect a land grab, and to continue the shenanigans that caused this debacle.

Since they don't have the fortitude and the faith to do what our grandparents did and build their own church, they intend, yet again - STILL, after nearly destroying what it took decades to build -  through their own selfishness, to try to take a church and its assets away from this community.

Not on our watch!

WHAT GIVES?

It would seem that one could be forgiven for asking this question!
  • The lawsuit has been dismissed.
  • All but one of the elected parish council members has been sworn in, despite dismissal of the lawsuit - which was a CONDITION of sweraring in the remaining candidates. Mr. Bapis chose to decline - Mr. Armaou did NOT - the suit is dismissed - Mr. Armaou MUST and SHOULD be sworn in IMMEDIATELY!
  • And, ULTIMATELY, the community is NOT to be split.
Yet Mr. Bruce Shand has, despite any of these circumstances, apparently, failed to disband registration for a separate corporate entity for Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church! (Note: others for "disobeying" -  for far less -  were SANCTIONED! We demand EQUAL treatment for Mr. Shand!)

Actually, it seems that the TWO corporate entities in the name of the Prophet Elias Church were disbanded once the decision was made to leave the community intact and to have a general assembly followed by free and fair elections. The one showing Mr. Mylonakis as registered agent was, and still appears to be, inactivated. Mr. Shand's registration showed as inactive throughout late April and all of May. Yet it was activated on June 4th - the SAME day the plaintiffs signed to dismiss the lawsuit against former parish council members! Is this a coincidence?
At a time when this community is desperately trying to heal, it seems that the diehards in a small minority are STILL insistent, despite several votes indicating NO SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT for a split, and will not let this go!

What part of "NO" isn't being understood?

The parish council, the clergy and the hierarchy should immediately INSIST that this entity be inactivated. Enough is enough! Let the dividers STOP!

A MEMBER OF THE ELECTIONS COMMITTEE SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT

Moderators' Note:  In the recent letter we received from the Metropolitan prior to his ratification of 13 of 15 elected parish council members, some controversy has arisen. The Metropolitan was obviously informed as to highly specific stewardship issues with some of the newly elected members. It was - erroneously - assumed that the Election Committee had informed the Metropolitan of the "stewardship problems".

Mr. Dean Dinas, member of the Election Committee, has asked that we post the following comments he would like to make regarding the subject.

I summarize below the process as it occurred during this Parish Council Election:

a) The Metropolis of Denver recognized our vetting process as meeting their [temporarily relaxed] standard for Parish Council candidates this time, and the clergy+Holy Trinity Cathedral Administrator solely reviewed Stewardship records.
b) After they were satisfied the candidates met the Metropolis' standard, they sent [just] the summary to the Metropolis; the Election Commitee never had access to Stewardship records, and, per UPRs, accepted the vetting process, and this level of detail was never shared with the Metropolis of Denver.
c) The Election Committee and office of the GOCSLC which sent the summary of this vetting process had no other contact with the Metropolis of Denver between the time they sent the vetted list to the Metropolis and after the Elections.
d) At no time during this process did the detailed Stewardship records of the Parish Council candidates leave the control of the Holy Trinity Cathedral church office or the clergy who vetted the candidates to run. There was no reason for any database containing these records to be accessed or shared, other than for the purposes of LOCAL church office analysis in the vetting of the candidates.
As a member of the GOCSLC Election Committee, I can confirm the above, since I was in continuing contact with the Holy Trinity Cathedral Administrator to ensure we were all in compliance with the Metropolis of Denver standards, and the UPRs as they applied to the Election Committee.

- Dean C. Dinas

BILL PAULOS EXTENDS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWLY ELECTED P.C.

Congratulations to all of those willing to serve our community.

Clearly we have all won a tremendous victory by filling our parish council with strong, courageous people with a vision for local control and a unified future.

To the new members: you have an opportunity to be one of the most historically significant parish council’s in the history of our community. Stay strong, show courage to make the tough decisions.

Let’s provide the leadership to change the direction of our community:

  1. New leadership
  2. Local control of decision making
  3. Balance the budget (as a result of the new leadership and re-connection of the disenfranchised)
  4. Be one community
I salute each of you for taking this opportunity and I am volunteering to support you in any way you wish.

Thank you again and congratulations,

Bill Paulos
