“Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them,

and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

But it shall not be so among you:

but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto,

but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:25-28, KJV)

The word the Athenians used for their Assembly was Ekklesia, the same word used in the New Testament for Church
(and it is the greatest philological irony in all of Western history that this word,
which connoted equal participation in all deliberation by all members,
came to designate a kind of self-perpetuating, self-protective Spartan gerousia -
which would have seemed patent nonsense to Greek-speaking Christians of New Testament times,
who believed themselves to be equal members of their Assembly.)

BREAKING NEWS: The Letter We're About to Receive

Apparently, the Proistamenoi and Parish Council are about to send us this letter, assuming no further revisions and on official letterhead. (Click here to see the draft version not as yet on letterhead.) The text of this letter (below) also provides is a chilling description of what the Metropolitan has in store for us. (His letter is not as yet included). Read what's to come and weep - yet again.

July 27, 2010

Dear Parishioners,

On July 20, 2010 the Parish Council and the Clergy received a signed petition and a resolution. This resolution was copied and mailed to His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah, to the Legal Counsel of the Archdiocese and to the Legal Counsel of the Metropolis by a chosen representative of the signers. The petition is requesting a special general assembly to act on the specific resolution.

His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah has mailed the Clergy and the Parish Council of our Parish his response to the petition and resolution, which we have enclosed. He has denied the request for a General Assembly and has corrected actions that the General Assemblies have voted upon in the past which are in conflict with the “Uniform Parish Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America”. The Parish Council will take corrective measures to correct these anomalies so that we, as a Parish of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, are in correct order with the Archdiocese.

In the Lord’s Service,

The Clergy and Parish Council of the Greek Orthodox Church
Of Greater Salt Lake

MODERATOR'S COMMENTS:
This community does not DESERVE such treatment from its clergy. It is high time we were able to check out some better-qualified candidates as our priests. Is it really too much to ask for priests
  • who actually have some people skills;
  • who might not have splitting this community and slandering long-standing stewards on their agenda;
  • who do not prevaricate;
  • who honor the honest needs and expressed will of the community;
  • who work with all the members of the parish instead of their favored few;
  • who foster and insist upon honest and transparent administrative practices;
  • who put the Church before themselves;
  • who love BOTH churches and honor all members in our community.
Oh, and while we're at it, how about having some parish council members who don't think they have "get into heaven FREE" cards, and who don't hyperventilate if the clergy look at them cross-wise while mentioning the "divinely inspired" UPRs, along with uncited canon law? How about parish council members who stick up for their church and community? Remember? The same community their parents, grandparents and great-grandparents built, first for the greater glory of the Lord, and then for us, their posterity!

I appeal to you. Yes, You, the parish council member who reading this now. I know you read the blog to get a feel for the thoughts and grumblings that are so pervasive throughout the community now. I know that you feel torn and saddened by what is taking place in this community now. I know that you do not agree with the actions of a few of the other parish council members (you know exactly who I mean). I know that you flinch each time the attacks, harassment, threats and name calling continues to be made by those same people against innocent members of this community. It hurts you to know that you are involved in these actions.

I appeal to you, if you are honest honest in your desires to bring peace to this community. I ask you to STOP. Stop following the misguided advise of certain individuals on the parish council and clergy. Stop voting with those who would continue this irreversible tailspin that will ultimately result only in disaster.

You have heard the quote "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" Please pray on these words tonight. Please look in the mirror and ask yourself if your actions or in-actions are hurting this community. Please stand up for this community and resign from the parish council. It is not a parish council of growth and harmony, it is a puppet council. It is lead by dishonesty and contempt. It only wishes control by any means necessary. It seeks to destroy and divide. It is an abomination.

Resign now. Show this community that you love peace and harmony and that you reject those who wish to destroy all that has been built by our forefathers in God's name. Resign now and show them you stand with our Lord and Savior. Resign now and show them you stand for peace and unity.

May God bless you and guide you in this endeavor for peace. It will be difficult but you will see that it will have been worth it.
